Hypermobility and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder

Hypermobility and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder

Information for Young People, Parents and Carers

What is Hypermobility?

Hypermobility means that a joint can move more than usual.
“Hyper” means more, and “mobility” means movement.

Ligaments help keep joints stable.
In hypermobility, the ligaments are looser, so the joints move further.

Hypermobility is not an illness or a disease.
It is simply the way some people are built, and it is very common in children.

What is Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder (HSD)?

Most children with hypermobility have no symptoms.
If your child does have symptoms, they may be described as having Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder (HSD).
