Intoeing Gait

Information for Young People, Parents and Carers

What is Intoeing Gait?

Some children walk with their feet pointing inwards.
This is called intoeing.
It is common in young children and may affect one or both feet.

Common concerns

Children who intoe may trip more often when they are learning to walk.
However:

  • they can be just as good at sport as other children
  • they are not more likely to have back, hip or joint problems
  • it does not affect their long‑term ability to walk, run or jump

Intoeing may look more noticeable if your child has flexible joints or when they are tired.
It does not get worse and usually improves as they grow.
