Learning objectives 

  • Be able to carry out a subjective and objective assessment of the neuromuscular child - community and specialist perspective
  • Be aware of red flags for identifying a neuromuscular disorder (NMD) and what to do with that information
  • Be able to describe main features and progression of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA)
  • Have a basic knowledge of Charcot Marie Tooth (CMT) and where to start when assessing neuromuscular babies
  • Have a clear understanding of specialist role of community and specialist neuromuscular teams in neuromuscular disorders and how best to deliver care (given published international standards of care for DMD and SMA)
  • Be able to use assessments to select best management strategies, adapt them overtime and understand the impact of different diagnoses on management
  • Be aware of the toolkit of management strategies for use in NMD) stretches, activity and exercise) orthotics and equipment
  • To understand the importance of respiratory and spinal management be able to clinically reason appropriate interventions
  • To be able to formulate a basic management plan for a child with a neuromuscular disease in a community setting and to be able to justify the need for regular physiotherapy input and review
