This course is aimed at physiotherapists who are either new to, or are interested in, treating children (0 to 18 years) who present with musculoskeletal concerns. These might include but are not limited to:

  • MSK physios who usually treat adults but sometimes are required to see children
  • Band 5 or new band 6 physios who are new to paediatrics
  • Paediatric physios who generally treat children with neurological problems, but sometimes treat children with musculoskeletal issues

Learning Outcomes:

  • Have an understanding of how the skeletal system forms in utero and continues to change throughout childhood to skeletal maturity.
  • Explain how growth can impact on pathology or presenting complaints.
  • Describe a systematic approach to use when assessing a baby, toddler, child or adolescent.
  • Be able to identify “red” and “yellow” flags applicable to children.
  • Explain how to refer on to appropriate health care providers.
  • Describe what safeguarding training they will need in order to practice.
  • Understand how the musculoskeletal system of a child and young person can differ to that of a skeletally mature one and how injury patterns can differ in this group of patients.
