Pulling up into standing, and standing, is a big milestone. It’s important to remember, play in all other positions (on their back, side, tummy and sitting) will contribute to building your baby’s movement skills. First, babies need to be comfortable in these positions to have built the foundation skills required for standing.
Babies will use their environment to help them pull into standing. At this stage, it’s important to do another check of your environment to ensure the space is safe for your baby.
Your baby will often first learn to stand on their own with the support of a low surface, such as a sofa.
When you baby is learning to stand, you can support them at stable, low, surfaces and encourage them to play with toys.
As they get stronger and more balanced, babies will try to use one or both hands to play with the toy, often leaning their tummy against the furniture so it’s worth checking the furniture won't move.
