'Fantastic course. Have recommended to my team. I think it should be made annual' (Delegate Feedback)
The East Anglia Region 2020 CPD programme kicked off with a study day on Saturday, 18th January on Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy.
The day, which was held at the Peacock Centre in Cambridge, was facilitated by guest speakers Stephanie Cawker (Physiotherapy Lead for Neurodisabilities and SDR Clinical Co-ordinator, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust) and Katharine Mead (Paediatric Physiotherapist, Suffolk).
During the morning session, Steph presented a comprehensive overview of spasticity management, the UK SDR national guidance , the pathway to SDR surgery and patient selection criteria, post-surgery and ongoing rehabilitation guidelines, goal setting and expected outcomes.
Before lunch a child who had had SDR surgery came in with her mother and talked about her experiences. As always it was helpful and entertaining to hear about the patient / family experience. She spoke about how the variety of different physios she had worked with and the activities that kept her motivated and how having a connection with the physio helped her ... a shared passion for Harry Potter! Interestingly, she talked about the fact that she had noticed that different physios had slightly different approaches and about how having her twin sister involved in some sessions had helped to keep her motivated.
The afternoon session was led by Kat who spoke about muscle strengthening principles based on current research and how to relate this to the CP population. The afternoon session was rounded off with some group work looking at case studies and treatment techniques that could be used to help increase muscle strength post SDR surgery.
On behalf of the East Anglia Region Committee, I would like to thank Steph and Kat for delivering such an informative and comprehensive regional study day.
