CPIP-SW is a group of physiotherapists, paediatricians and orthopaedic surgeons from the South West Region committed to promoting the implementation of CPIP within the Region.  We meet twice a year to to review progress, share best practice and experiences, and discuss strategies for developing the delivery of CPIP in the Region.

Following our most recent meeting in October, I am pleased to be be able to report that over half of the areas within the Region are now using CPIP to some extent.  At present only Bristol and South Gloucestershire are implementing CPIP assessments with access to the CPIP database and currently have 266 children registered on the database.  Another six areas are using CPIP assessments without the database and have measured a further 201 children between them, and a further 2 areas have run pilot clinics.  Six areas are not currently using CPIP at all.

One year ago, we recorded that CPIP assessments had been provided for just 68 children in the Region.  In just one year this number has risen to nearly 500 ... this is a fantastic achievement especially in the context of the past 9 months during the pandemic.  The feedback from areas using CPIP has been very positive with reports of more timely and appropriate referrals to orthopaedics and decreased waiting times.  Therapists have also reported that they are finding CPIP a useful tool to guide clinical reasoning and goal setting for individual children and for prioritising intervention.

The group will continue to look at the barriers to implementation in an effort extend the use of CPIP across all localities.  We are currently looking at CQUINs as a potential funding option for a CPIP-SW database.  We are also reviewing information governance issues related to this.

CPIP-UK National Network

Myself and Rachel Rapson represent CPIP-SW at the CPIP-UK National Network meetings.  The CPIP-UK National Network has recently updated CPIP training resources and we have agreed a new plan for delivering CPIP training to therapists.  This will now be co-ordinated within the Regions and so if you have any about CPIP training or other CPIP-related questions, please contact us..

The CPIP-UK Conference had been scheduled to take place in Liverpool this year but had to be cancelled due to the pandemic.  We are pleased to announce that the 1st Cerebral Palsy Integrated Pathway UK Meeting has now been re-scheduled to take place on 18th June 2020.  We have a great line up of international speakers, including Mr James Robb, Dr Gunnar Hagglund, Dr Charlie Fairhurst, Mr Alf Bass, and Ms Lesley Harper, who will examine the evidence, inform and update clinicians, share good practice, facilitate equity of care and identify areas for further research.

A new CPIP website has now been launched as a resource for medical professionals and for children/young people with CP and their families.
