Philip Amess is the Clinical Lead for the Department of Neonatology at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton and at the Princess Royal Hospital, Haywards Heath.

As a member of the Perinatal Brain Research Group at University College Hospital in the 1990s, he was part of a research programme investigating therapeutic strategies to prevent or ameliorate brain damage following birth asphyxia.  The neuroprotective effects of mild hypothermia following resuscitation were demonstrated and he has subsequently been closely involved in the clinical trials and pathways of care for infants undergoing hypothermia treatment.

Philip has an interest in the use of the cerebral function monitor, cranial MRI and structured neurodevelopmental follow-up in the care of these birth asphyxiated infants.
